Description
Hyde Perrott (1880-1935) Pastel of Lake Manapouri NZ
Hyde Perrott was a watercolorist and pastelist, Hyde Perrott painted mostly along the Murray River in the Sydney region and Northern New South Wales. This piece is actually a New Zealand Pastel of Lake Manapouri. According to Maori legend Lake Manapouri was created by the tears of two sisters, Moturua and Koronae, who were daughters of an old chief in the region. Koronae journeyed deep into the forest one day only to become stranded after a fall. Her sister Moturua went looking for her and when she found Koronae she realised that Koronae could not be rescued. Moturua lay with Koronae and there they lay until they died, their tears creating Lake Manapouri. Lake Manapouri means anxious or sorrowful heart because of the grief of the two sisters.
Yes… Sad… but incredible provenance and history to this area and an equally lovely early 20th Century Pastel signed to the bottom left corner and framed in a period oak frame with name plate. The frame measures approx 73cm wide by 57cm high
